Radical Red Robots win the Presentation Award at the First LEGO League Regional Competition

The Alderwood Boys & Girls Club LEGO Robotic team, the Radical Red Robots, participated in their first Regional competition at Lynnwood High School on Saturday December 3rd.  The competition was an all-day event.  Before lunch, the team was judged on their teamwork skills and their ability to explain why they built their robot the way that they did.  They also had to give a presentation about contamination in food.  Our team had researched how crab was contaminated during the BP oil spill.  They came up with a product, Crabteria, that would make crabs molt to get rid of the bad bacteria.  After lunch, the robotic competition got under way!  Each team had 3 chances to accomplish different missions they had programed into their robots.  The Radical Red Robots pulled out an amazing score on their third try and achieved a wonderful 7th place out 28 teams!!  They also recieved a trophy for their presentation, and one of our coaches received the Most Inspiring Young Coach!  Great job Radical Red Robots!!
Jon Brockman visits the Alderwood Boys & Girls Club

Jon Brockman, former UW Basketball player and current Milwaukie Bucks player, came to visit us on November 17th.  He played pool and basketball with the teens, and talked with the elementary kids about having goals in life and working hard at school.  Then he slam dunked and signed pictures and shirts for the kids!  It was a fun and inspiring day.

Microsoft Techfest
In October, we took eight 4th-8th graders to Microsoft for the Washington State Boys & Girls Club Techfest.  We were able to participate in many workshops including: LEGO Robotics, Claymation Movie Making, Career Development, Team Building, Green Energy, and more.  Although all the workshops were fun and educational, the highlight for most of our participants was playing in a giant room filled with Kinect and Xbox games that had not come out on the market yet!  Thank you Microsoft for hosting such a fun event!  The kids had a great experience
